Press & Media Statement
Artist Name: Tyler Hanzel
Medium: Hand-drawn compass-based geometric works
Location: Aspen, Colorado
Artist Overview
Tyler Hanzel creates intricate geometric artworks composed entirely of hand-drawn circles. Using only a compass and pen, the artist spends hours—or sometimes weeks—repeating the same motion with meditative focus. What begins as a single circle builds into complex structures that reveal optical vibrations, architectural symmetries, and patterns reminiscent of sacred geometry across cultures.
Each artwork is created through breath, repetition, and precision. The process merges craftsmanship with intuition, letting the geometry evolve on its own rather than being forced into design. The results are detailed, optical, and often described as “alive,” appearing to vibrate or shift as the viewer moves.
Artistic Direction
The practice embraces ancient mathematical systems yet approaches them through contemporary exploration. Drawing on the lineage of Plato’s solids, Euclid’s geometry, and timeless design principles found in nature, the work seeks to revive historical forms through devotion, not imitation. The art is not a recreation of tradition—it is a living continuation of it.
The focus is not on perfection, but on presence. Small variations in pressure, placement, or movement transform simple circles into immersive compositions. The drawings are meditations made visible: records of attention, patience, and evolving technique.
Themes & Inquiry
The circle as a universal structure
Sacred geometry interpreted through modern craftsmanship
Repetition as a spiritual and technical practice
Visual perception, vibration, and optical illusion
The slow discipline of hand-drawn precision
Artist’s Statement
“I draw circles not to control geometry, but to witness what it reveals. With each repetition, form teaches me something new. These patterns are ancient, but when I draw them, they feel unseen—like discoveries happening through the hand, not the mind.”
