Drawing with a Compass

For centuries, the compass has served as more than a drafting instrument—it has been a tool for understanding order, proportion, and humanity’s relationship to the infinite. From the geometric studies of the Renaissance to the sacred architecture and symbolic patterns found across ancient cultures, the circle has remained one of the most enduring forms ever created. It appears in astronomy, nature, ritual, mathematics, and spiritual symbolism as a representation of unity, continuity, and perfection. Inspired by the artists, architects, and thinkers of the past who used geometry as a language for exploring reality itself, Tyler Hanzel approaches the compass as both a technical instrument and a meditative one—using repetition and precision to uncover increasingly complex structures from a single eternal form.

Moved by Persistence

I began drawing circles as a fun activity at night to relax. It all started with a $6 compass I purchased on a whim one day and soon enough I was drawing the Seed and Flowers of Life with perfection, not always, but constantly improving. Soon enough I started evolving the geometries I was drawing and the artworks were becoming more complex. I was determined to make less mistakes and more balanced compositions in the work. I was persistent. Relentlessly persistent. Then something switched and I began progressing at a rapid rate. Then a lull of drawing and then once again another burst of creative spirit began flowing through me. So I stayed consistent. Now looking back on all of those thousands of hours of drawing I am grateful for the experience. Hard work truly does pay off.
